Trace the route to any host
Every network hop between check servers around the world and the target
What traceroute shows
Every check server sends probes with a growing TTL and records each router that answers.
Hop by hop
Up to 30 hops with the address of every router on the way that answered.
Three probes per hop
Three round-trip times for every hop show where on the route latency grows.
Destination reached
See whether packets reach the host or where exactly the route stops.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers about how the check works and how to read its results.
What do the asterisks mean?
The hop did not answer in time. Many routers limit or ignore traceroute probes, so a silent hop is normal as long as the next hops respond.
Why are some hops shown as a private network?
The router answered from a private or reserved address that is not routed on the internet, so its address is hidden.
Which protocol does traceroute use?
ICMP echo requests with a growing TTL, the same method as tracert on Windows: up to 30 hops with three probes each.
What is the difference between traceroute and MTR?
Traceroute shows the path once. MTR probes every hop many times and adds packet loss and jitter statistics for each of them.
